The Sonoma Coast is an AVA (American Viticultural Area) that is unfortunately large and sometimes has difficulty finding a “sense of place” due to its vast size, varied soil types, and differing climates. However in recent years the Sonoma Coast has become well known for its specialty, Pinot Noir. Landmark has known about the potential of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir for many years and in this library tasting blog post we’re going to focus on some of our well known Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs from various vintages.

2002 Grand Detour Pinot Noir: This 10 year old multi-vineyard Pinot Noir is light in body with aromas of wild berry fruit and tobacco. The remaining structured tannins lead over red fruits flavors on the palate. This wine is probably at its peak and should be consumed in the next 6 months.

2004 Grand Detour Pinot Noir: The 2004 harvest was early due … Read more »

Today I am focusing on our single vineyard Lorenzo Chardonnay.  In general California chardonnay doesn’t have a reputation for ageablity; however, I am prepared to change that misconception with this vertical tasting of Lorenzo Chardonnay.  These older vintage Lorenzo Chardonnays are from stellar vintages which have helped their longevity.

2002 Lorenzo Chardonnay: This 10 year old California chardonnay can hold its head up high; from the “sensational” 2002 Sonoma vintage it still shows nice citrus, almond, mineral, and crushed stone flavors while slight sherry and petrol notes are present on the nose with one taster also getting a  “popcorn” aroma. This wine is probably at its peak and should be consumed in the next 6 months.

2003 Lorenzo Chardonnay: Shows bruised apple and petrol on the nose with lemongrass flavors and strong mineral notes on the finish that also shows oak. This wine is probably at its peak … Read more »

LOBSTER ROLLS
Cold lobster on a Hot Bun

2 2-1/4 pound live lobsters, cooked, meat removed to yield a pound chopped
¼ cup celery cut into a ¼ inch dice
¼ cup mayonnaise (approximately)
¼ teaspoon lemon zest
Salt and pepper
Paprika
4 hot dog rolls (New England style if possible)
Butter

1. In a bowl, blend the lobster meat with the celery, mayonnaise and lemon zest.
Gently mix together and add salt and pepper to taste.

2. Open the hot dog buns flat without separating the two halves. Butter very
generously.

3. Heat a griddle or skillet and swirl in a little butter without burning. Lay the buns
cut side down and place a weight on top of them (a heavy pan will do). Cook
until they are just golden.

4. Immediately fill with the lobster meat, dust with a little paprika and serve. The
buns need to be … Read more »

Our Spring 2011 Wine Club shipment features two beautiful wines, 2008 Damaris Reserve Chardonnay and 2009 Spring Hill Pinot Noir.  Both wines are perfect accompaniments to fresh spring ingredients.  The Damaris is a 58% Flocchini Vineyard, 42% Sangiacomo Vineyards blend.  Delicate citrus notes, with a hint of toasty oak.  Only 800 cases produced.  Spring Hill is a new addition to our family, located in the prized Petaluma Gap area of Sonoma Coast .  This Pinot exhibits blackberries and boysenberries on the nose and finishes long with hints of tobacco.

In this episode of Cooking with Carol, Carol pairs the wines with a couple easy spring dishes.  The Pan-Seared Salmon Salad can be served warm or cold, but please chill the Damaris, :) .  With the Spring Hill, Carol cooked a sheared duck breast with a orange jus.  Enjoy!

We, here at Landmark, value the unique diversity of our chardonnays.  From the minerality and citrus tones found in Lorenzo, to the rich, unctuous, full-bodied Damaris, each chardonnay exhibits their own characteristics.  We always strive to distinguish our chardonnays from any other.  In turn, we appreciate when someone else takes the time to recognize the complexity within our wines.

There is a gap that divides the world consume the wine. There are people who prefer the robust flavors of red wine and the wines you prefer the delicate balance of white. For those who are limited to one type of wine has not released the full potential of the beverage known as “nectar of the gods….read more

A few years back  the demand for high quality Sonoma County fruit had peaked, and we needed more fruit.   We decided to looked south to Santa Barbara for new sources of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Originally the fruit was simply to be added to Overlook and Grand Detour.  However, we quickly realized the quality of the fruit and decided to bottle them as Single Vineyard wines, Bien Nacido Chardonnay and Solomon Hills Pinot Noir.

Both wines show exceptional complexity, with distinct terrior notes that  epitomize Santa Maria Valley.  In today’s Washington Post, the uniqueness of Bien Nacido Vineyard is explored,

Nicholas Miller seemed reluctant to extol the virtues of Bien Nacido Vineyards as he drove me around the property his family has farmed for four decades in California’s northern Santa Barbara County. I was there to write about an iconic American vineyard that is famed for producing some of … Read more »

Came across this post on Robert Parker’s bulletin.  A gentleman based in Honolulu conducted a blind tasting featuring White Burgundies and California Chards.  To his surprise and our delight, his group gave top marks to our ’06 Overlook.  Check out the post below.

Americans love to drink young wines.  Unlike our European counterparts, the wines we buy are consumed within 6-12 months of purchase.  While there is nothing wrong with this practice, most consumers never experience the beauty of a mature wine.

At Landmark, we put way 10 cases of each wine for our library.  Until recently, these wine were used for private events, special tastings and our own enjoyment.  This year we decided to share our treasures with the world.  Each month we will select one wine as the feature library wine of the month.  During the month that particular wine will be offered at a discounted rate and will be reviewed by our winemakers.

Our first selection is the 2001 Lorenzo Chardonnay.  When we first released this wine, we thought it would age 5-6 years.  However, nine years later it continues to shine.  Check out our Winemaker, Eric Stern and … Read more »
