Landmark Vineyards Review – Glorious Guesthouse amidst the Grapes

by Marilyn Anderson & Dennis L. Lanning

“Imagine having your own beautiful cottage in the middle of a vast winery. Then imagine yourself standing in your own private patio, overlooking gently sloping mountains dotted with rows and rows of bright green grapevines. The vista includes a lush pergola providing a shady place to relax and a picnic area, should you choose to eat outdoors. Nearby, there is a small fish pond, and even your own personal bocce court.”

A few years back  the demand for high quality Sonoma County fruit had peaked, and we needed more fruit.   We decided to looked south to Santa Barbara for new sources of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Originally the fruit was simply to be added to Overlook and Grand Detour.  However, we quickly realized the quality of the fruit and decided to bottle them as Single Vineyard wines, Bien Nacido Chardonnay and Solomon Hills Pinot Noir.

Both wines show exceptional complexity, with distinct terrior notes that  epitomize Santa Maria Valley.  In today’s Washington Post, the uniqueness of Bien Nacido Vineyard is explored,

Nicholas Miller seemed reluctant to extol the virtues of Bien Nacido Vineyards as he drove me around the property his family has farmed for four decades in California’s northern Santa Barbara County. I was there to write about an iconic American vineyard that is famed for producing some of … Read more »

Kathleen Hill reports of her visit to Landmark:

Landmark Vineyards’ owners Mike and Mary Colhoun invited friends to learn about the conversion of their 11-acre vineyard facing Highway 12 from conventional to organic farming by the renowned organic farmer Phil Coturri.

Coturri explained how after a phylloxera invasion of 2004, they turned a negative to a positive and basically plowed deeper to bring more bugs and minerals to the surface and turned the vineyard to an angle so that the September sun would hit both sides of each vine equally.

Having suffered through much wine tasting research in France, winemakers Eric Stern and Greg Stach decided to favor southern Rhône reds like Chateau Neuf du Pape, planting mourvèdre, viognier and grenache, many of the vines arriving via Beau Castel and Tablas Creek winery in Paso Robles. The result is their Esprit du Rhône.

Mary Colhoun’s dear friend and chef, Carol … Read more »

Check out what Mike Madigan had to say about the 2007 Overlook on his log.

“Finally, a Truly Spellbinding Chardonnay”

Easy-going but unabashedly multifarious figure before this penman’s palate. Pronounced notes with impressive sequence, coherence. Delightful presence and mouthfeel that transcends to all levels of the sip. The variety in appellation, her three homes, the quiddity of this bottle’s voracity. Tall and thick harmonies of caramel, green apple and almond, bestow a character of an easy nature. She doesn’t force anything, she understands the moment, the reality of enjoyment at an insouciant pace. “Sip as and when you wish,” she says. Further into my sips, she reveals her smoky and foggy approach, the creamy nature of her dialogue would seduce even the most particular of glass tilters. A true treat, a charming Chardonnay, one I save for the the dusk succeeding a hot Sonoma Valley Summer. A character with a … Read more »

Came across this post on Robert Parker’s bulletin.  A gentleman based in Honolulu conducted a blind tasting featuring White Burgundies and California Chards.  To his surprise and our delight, his group gave top marks to our ’06 Overlook.  Check out the post below.
